Collectors distinguish different perforation or perforation sizes, which are determined by counting the number of holes per two centimeters. Perforation gauges come in various versions manual measurement or by an optical measurement.

A manual perforation gauge is a kind of ruler made of plastic for measuring the perforation on it you can let the distances overlap with your stamp.Another version can work with pins that all have to fall exactly in the teeth, this is easy if you want to measure e.g. in the middle of a stamp sheet. The digital one is the most luxurious version where the perforation is optically tested. Everywhere a perforation meter is therefore an indispensable instrument for the serious stamp collector.

The Philadent is a very sturdy plastic template for determining the perforation of stamps. Simply move the stamp on the relevant scale until the points of the individual perforations exactly match the markings or holes. Also, this Philadent is equipped with a 17 cm ruler.
